2016 New Attractions/Rumors

Adventureland Iowa:

Monster – A beast is arriving at Adventureland Iowa in 2016 as they build their wildest roller coaster yet, Monster. Monster will be a wild new Gerstlauer Euro-Fighter. It will feature incredible inversions, one of which will be a first in the United States. The ride will stand in place of the park’s log flume. To find out more, you can read our article here.

Busch Gardens Tampa:

Cobra’s Curse – Busch Gardens Tampa announced their 2016 plans for a Mack Rides Spinning Coaster, which will be known as Cobra’s Curse. It will be a heavily themed and family friendly attraction. For more information, you can check out our article with the announcement. For construction updates, you can check out our friends over at Pixels at the Parks and The BGT Buzz.

Busch Gardens Williamsburg:

New Restaurant and New Show – 2016 will be an off-year for Busch Gardens Williamsburg after 2015’s new roller coaster. This is typical of the park, a coaster one year and an off-year the next seems to be the trend for the park. Instead of a new ride, the park will bring a new restaurant to the Italy land and a new show to France. To find out more, you can find our article here.

California’s Great America:

(9/29/15) Mass Effect 4D Attraction – In 2016, California’s Great America will be installing a brand new and immersive 4D attraction within their Action Theater. The first of its kind new ride will bring the popular video game franchise Mass Effect into the park in the spring of next year. For more information on the new attraction, you can view our article here.

For construction updates and rumor updates at this park, our friends at California Coaster Kings have you covered!

RUMOR – Vortex Transformation – Last year, Cedar Point took their old B&M standup coaster, Mantis, and brought new life to it by replacing the old trains with floorless coaster trains. It was a successful endeavor and Cedar Fair, the parent company of both parks, expressed interest in doing this again. Based on the rumors, California’s Great America will be the next park to receive this treatment on their Vortex roller coaster.

Canada’s Wonderland:

Skyhawk and Flying Eagles – Canada’s Wonderland announced two new flat rides for 2016, Skyhawk and Flying Eagles. Skyhawk will be a Gerstlauer Sky Fly and Flying Eagles will be a Larson Flying Scooters ride. For more information, you can check out our article here.

Carowinds:

Carolina Harbor – Recently, Carowinds announced a major waterpark expansion in the place of their now demolished Thunder Road roller coaster. The expansion will include a new Snake Pit slide tower, manufactured by WhiteWater Attractions, a new wave pool, new kids play areas, and even more. You can find more information here.

Cirque Imagine – One of the most popular shows at Kings Island and Kings Dominion will be coming to Carowinds in 2016! You can find more information here.

New Starbucks – This is minor news, but Carowinds will be building a Starbucks in 2016 near the front gate.

(10/8/15) – CONFIRMED – Plants Vs. Zombies: 3Z Arena will be coming to Carowinds in 2016! The attraction will bring a new intra-active experience themed to the popular video game franchise in the park’s Action Theater. It will be one of the most immersive rides ever installed for the park. For more information, you can read our article here!

(9/29/15) – In another Cedar Fair park on the other side of the country, California’s Great America, EA will be partnering up with the theme park chain to make a new ride themed to their game franchise Mass Effect. What does this have to do with Plants Vs Zombies? EA is the distributer of the game. I’m not sure if the distributer is able to give the theme park rights for a game, but I have a good feeling that this will be the start of a new partnership.

Not much is known about this ride, but Carowinds teased something at the Carolina Harbor announcement by playing the word “Brains” in the same voice from the popular game. More will be announced in October, but ThrillGeek had a great article explaining the rumor!

Cedar Point:

ValRavn – Cedar Point is building what is being called “an epic dissapointment” by frequent visitors of the park. This “dissapointment” is a new B&M dive coaster called ValRavn. This roller coaster is going to be the tallest and fastest dive coaster. It will feature three inversions, two steep drops, and will definitely be a fun ride. To learn more about this new ride, you can read our article here.

Disneyland Resort (Disneyland and Disney’s California Adventure):

Soarin’ Over The World – For 2016, Disney’s California Adventure will be bringing new life into their immensely popular Soarin’ attraction as they transform it into Soarin’ Over the World. Instead of just featuring California as the destination of the film, it will feature scenes from across the world. To find out more information, you can read our article here.

Dollywood:

Lightning Rod – Dollywood is creating their single largest attraction of all time in 2016, Lightning Rod. The Rocky Mountain Construction coaster will be the first ever launched wooden coaster and the world’s fastest wooden coaster. With wild elements, Dollywood is set to create a wild ride in 2016! Storm Chaser – In 2016, Kentucky Kingdom will be creating a wacky Rocky Mountain Construction steel hybrid coaster. Rumor – Slingshot – Several members of the theme park community are suggesting that Kings Dominion will build a Slingshot attraction in 2016. Other Cedar Fair parks have done this in the past and I believe that Kings Dominion might be next to do so.

Tropical Plunge – Kings Island will be expanding their waterpark in 2016 with the new Tropical Plunge slide tower. The slide tower will be another installation of Whitewater Attractions’s Snake Pit complex. To read more, head over here!

Ghost Town 75th Anniversary – For 2016, Knott’s Berry Farm will celebrate the Ghost Town section of the park’s 75th anniversary. This celebration involved the removal of the Screamin’ Swing and a much needed restoration of Ghostrider. You can find our article here! La Ronde:

Le Vampire Backwards – For 2016, La Ronde’s Batman: The Ride clone, Le Vampire will be operating in reverse as it becomes Le Vampire Backwards. This has been done at several of the other Six Flags parks and will make a fun limited time event for the park. If you want to here more you can check out our article.
Two New Flat Rides – 2016’s main additions at La ronde will be two new flat rides. The first of these two rides will be Gravitor, which is described as “a dance party in the sky.” To me, it sounds like it will be a Zamperla Air Race, but I am not certain. The park’s other new addition for 2016 will be a Larson Flying Scooters installation. To hear more about these new rides, you can read our article.

Lake Compounce:

Phobia Phear Coaster – For 2016, Lake Compounce will be building a Premier Rides Sky Rocket II roller coaster. The compact launched coaster will be a similar ride to Tempesto at Busch Gardens Williamsburg. It will be a fun coaster for a small park. For more information, head right over here!

New NINJAGO Land – A major expansion is making its way into Legoland California for 2016, NINJAGO land! For more information on these new slides, you can read our article here.

Six Flags Over Texas:

Three New Flat Rides – For 2016, Six Flags over Texas will be installing three new thrilling flat rides. The Riddler Revenge will be the largest of these three, it will be what I think will be a Huss Frisbee, but could also be either the Mondial or Zamperla version of the ride. The second will be the Catwoman Whip, which appears to be the same as Kings Dominion’s Triple Spin attraction. The final attraction will be Harley Quinn Spinsanity, which looks like it will be a modern version of the classic enterprise attraciton. If you’d like to find out more about these new attractions, you can read our article here.

Six Flags St. Louis:

Fireball – Six Flags St. Louis is constructing a flaming hot new ride for 2016, the Fireball. This wild new flat ride will flip riders around in one giant loop, stalling them upside-down at the top. Also, it will bring a brand new massive meet-n-greet building for guests to meet characters from the popular film.

Rivers of Light – As the night descends on the Animal Kingdom, the park’s waterways will take to life in the new Rivers of Light show. Rivers of Light will use projection technology and water screens to display a show similar to the popular World of Color show at Disney’s California Adventure, but instead of celebrating animation, it will celebrate animals. To hear more about this new show, you can check out our article here.

Soarin’ Over the World – For 2016, EPCOT will be bringing new life into their immensely popular Soarin’ attraction as they transform it into Soarin’ Over the World. 2017 New Attractions/Rumors

Universal Orlando Resort (Islands of Adventure and Universal Orlando):

Volcano Bay – For 2017, Universal Orlando Resort will unveil its latest major construction project, the Volcano Bay waterpark. Located next to the Cabana Bay Hotel, the “world’s first water theme park” will feature slides themed to a tropical world at heights rumored to be up to 200 feet high. To learn more about the incredible new waterpark, you can find our article here.

Fast and Furious: Supercharged – In the location of the attraction Disaster, Universal Orlando will be building a brand new ride based on their popular franchise, Fast and Furious. Although we know little about what this ride will be, the rumors are saying that it will be the same as the Fast and Furious location on the Universal Studios Hollywood tram tour. The ride has received lackluster reviews from the theme park community (and I overall agree with these reviews) and uses a similar system to the current Orlando attraction. To find out more about this new attraction and here more possibilities about what it might be, you can view our article here.

UPDATE – Jimmy Fallon Race Through New York – Twister closed on November 2nd to make way for a brand new ride themed to the popular late night show. It will open in 2017 and will involve a race through New York, but otherwise we have very few details. You can hear more about it here.

Rumor – Twister Replacement – Several members of the theme park community have been saying that Twister will likely close in the coming years. The question is, what could replace it? Most have been thinking that a Jimmy Fallon ride will replace Twister, but I have a feeling that it will have something to do with the hit Syfy movie, Sharknado (I am NOT saying that this will happen, this is just an idea of mine that I would love to see, it would be cheap to install and a funny spin on the classic ride). Although nothing has been confirmed, I expect to see a Twister replacement in 2017 or later.

Walt Disney World Resort (Magic Kingdom, Epcot, Hollywood Studios, and Animal Kingdom):

Pandora: World of Avatar – As part of Animal Kingdom’s transformation into a full day park, Pandora: World of Avatar will bring two new attractions and an incredible land full of bioluminescent plants similar to those in the movie. The two rides in the land will be a boat ride through the forests of Pandora and a ride called Flight of the Banshee, which will pretty much be Soarin’ over Pandora. You can find out more information here.

2018 Or Later New Attractions/Rumors

Disneyland Resort (Disneyland and Disney’s California Adventure):

Star Wars Land – With the opening of Harry Potter Land up at Universal Studios Hollywood next year, Disney needs something huge to compete with them, that is why they are building Star Wars Land. Star Wars Land will be coming to Disneyland in what I estimate as 2020 (construction is starting in 2016 according to Disney). The land will feature two new attractions, one that will allow guests to pilot the Millenium Falcon, and one that will put guests in a battle between the new order and the resistance. With cast members dressed as aliens, this land will definitely immerse guests into the Star Wars universe. To find out more information, check out our article here.

Walt Disney World Resort (Magic Kingdom, Epcot, Hollywood Studios, and Animal Kingdom):

Toy Story Land – At the D23 Expo, Disney announced a new Toy Story land for their Hollywood Studios park, which is about to undergo a massive transformation. This new land will feature two new attractions, a Slinky Dog Themed Family roller coaster, and a Green Alien themed flat ride. This land will also include the park’s current Toy Story Midway Mania attraction, which will be receiving a third track in the coming years. I am expecting this new land to open in 2018. Do you want to hear more about this family friendly land? You can find our article here.

Star Wars Land – After about five years, Disney has finally found their response to Harry Potter Land, which took theme park lands to an entirely new level when it opened just down the road at Universal Orlando. Star Wars Land will be coming to Disney’s Hollywood Studios (or whatever they call it when they re-name it) in what I estimate as 2020 (construction is starting in 2016 according to Disney). The land will feature two new attractions, one that will allow guests to pilot the Millenium Falcon, and one that will put guests in a battle between the new order and the resistance. With cast members dressed as aliens, this land will definitely immerse guests into the Star Wars universe. To find out more information, check out our article here.
