In Spring 2017, a new waterslide called “Miss Fortune Falls” will open at Walt Disney World’s Typhoon Lagoon waterpark. The new family raft ride will be the park’s first addition since 2005, when they installed the “Crush ‘N’ Gusher” water coaster.

Miss Fortune Falls will be located near the Crush ‘N’ Gusher. The attraction will revolve around the story of  Captain Mary Oceanear’s past. Captain Oceanear travelled around the ocean collecting treasure and artifacts before getting stranded at Typhoon Lagoon in a storm.

Riders will make their way to the top of the attraction and go on a whitewater adventure down the slide that will take guests past some of Captain Oceanear’s treasures. The ride experience will last a total of two minutes.

My Take – This is clearly Disney’s attempt to compete with Universal Orlando Resort’s new Volcano Bay waterpark. Although the slide sounds like it will be a fun one, I am not sure if it will be anything close to a big enough draw to compete with the impressive new waterpark. It does not appear that this slide will be particularly unique or break any records, so I don’t think it will do very much to compete with a huge waterpark. Even though I do not think this will help Disney much in keeping visitors away from Volcano Bay, I do think it is smart of them to try. Another major waterpark in Orlando does not appear to be adding anything to compete with Volcano Bay, which may not be a good idea for them. Even though I don’t think the slide will help them compete with Volcano Bay, it is nice that Disney is adding something to Typhoon Lagoon. Ten years is a long time to go without a new ride!
